
Matthew Jones has been the Music Director of the Timmins Symphony Orchestra since December 2000. He is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University where he studied performance Cello. Matthew was the Principal Cellist and studio teacher for the Georgian Bay Symphony from 1994 - 2001; he was also the associate Conductor of the Georgian Bay Symphony and has since returned as a guest Conductor. He has a adjudicated for several Music festivals in Ontario, most recently for a repeat engagement at the Guelph Music Festival. Matthew’s studies in conducting include programs at the Conductor’s Institute at Hartt University in Connecticut and as a participant Conductor at the 2005 Oregon Bach Festival Conductor’s Workshop (under the guidance of Helmuth Rilling).
Under Maestro Jones’ direction, the Timmins Symphony’s 2004 performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony took to the airwaves as part of TVOntario’s Studio Two broadcast. Under his guidance the TSO has been host to many talented and world class artists including James Ehnes, Janice Martin, Jasper Wood, Peter Allen and Teresa Walters. In 2005, the TSO was awarded the Prestigious Betty Webster Award for their contribution to Orchestral Music in Canada.
Matthew maintains a career as a Recorder soloist (being featured with the Kitchener/Waterloo Symphony, CBC radio and across Ontario). His CD, Just Pipes (with Jan Overduin), is available through the TSO office. Matthew is the recipient of a Canada Council grant with Brian Current to have a Recorder Concerto composed. His duties with the TSO also include directing the Timmins Symphony Chorus (since 2004) and teaching with the Geoffrey James Lee School of Music. Matthew enthusiastically advocates for the Arts in the community and beyond and he and his growing family are proud to call Timmins home.
