The Geoffrey James Lee Memorial Endowement Fund
1961 - 1999
Mr. Lee was born in Windsor, Ontario and studied music at Sir Wilfred Laurier Universtiy before coming to Timmins seventeen years ago. He was an accomplished cellist who was the Music Director and Conductor of the Timmins Symphony Orchestra since 1988. He was nationally recognized as an outstanding conductor in the middle of his career.
His love of music showed in the many pieces he composed and arranged. Mr. Lee was also an excellent teacher and as Music Director and Conductor of the TSO, was the driving force behind the growth and development of the Timmins Symphony Music School. Under his enthusiastic tutalage, the school grew from one teacher to the present faculty.
He was active in local sports such as ball hockey, volleyball, and golf and also loved gardening as well as taking art lessons. Mr. Lee made a huge impact on the arts community and on his friends. The effects of his presence and the results of his efforts will long be felt here. Mr. Lee died suddenly on June 17, 1999 while attending a conducting workshop in Ottawa.
This fund was started in 2000 and bears the name of Mr. Lee. It is hoped that the money in this fund would eventually be used for a home for the Timmins Symphony Orchestra.
This fund is also focused toward the continued development of the Timmins Symphony Music School. One use of these funds would be for scholarships for students.
